Angel-faced and attractive Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel has an impressive resume as far as accomplishments in the political arena. At least on the surface. But I’ve discovered Mandel has a lot of skeletons in his closet.
Mandel recently tossed his hat in the ring for Ohio U.S. Senate, going up against one of the country’s most radical and abrasive senators, Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Challenging Mandel in the Republican primary is former Ohio state senator and representative Kevin Coughlin.
Erick Erickson of Red State has done an article on Mandel and his surprising fundraising abilities in just a short amount of time. $2.34 million in just 3 months. Sen. Jim Demint of the Senate Conservatives Fund has endorsed Mandel and I have Demint’s email to that affect.
However, it always pays for one to do a little homework and some digging around beneath the surface. No telling what the shovel will pull out. First a little background.
Sherrod Brown was helped into office with the assistance of ACORN. ACORN whistleblower Anita Moncrief has documented this well. Below is an excerpt from Karyn Gillette’s finance plan for Sherrod. FYI Gillette worked for ProjectVote which is an off-shoot of ACORN:
Target Populations: Sherrod’s financial base is health care, law firms, labor, and other PAC’s. DeWine’s is the same but with the added advantage of banks, insurance, and the business community. His top Cleveland donors are Forest City, National City, …Sherrod will be able to raise money from his base…and because of his relationships with people like Ratners…. “ [emphasis mine].
And in case the name Ratner or Forest City Ratner doesn’t ring anyone’s bell, they are the huge real estate enterprise (among only things) headquartered in Cleveland who just happened to loan ACORN $1.5 million. From Moncrief’s same article:
ACORN’s ties to the Ratners run deep and most do not even realize that their influence reaches outside of New York. A review of donor records shows that James A. Ratner has been a donor to ACORN’s offshoot Project Vote since 2004. In 2005, the same year that ACORN and FCR signed their Memorandum of Understanding, Karyn Gillette was working in Ohio as a fundraising consultant for Jennifer Brunner, the Ohioans for a Fair Minimum Wage , and the Sherrod Brown campaign’s. Ms. Gillette work with the minimum wage campaign was a direct reason for her hire with Project Vote, since ACORN was a part of this coalition and was waging a war to get a more ACORN friendly Secretary of State.
This is the link to the letter signed by Forest City Enterprises to Bertha Lewis, former ACORN CEO agreeing to the loan. However, if Mandel is elected Ohio would be trading one ACORN connected senator for another. Although I can’t confirm by a marriage certificate, I’ve been told by various sources that Mandel is married to a Ratner. If this is indeed correct it would certainly explain his amazing fundraising and the huge enterprise that must be behind this 33 year old gentleman. Albert Ratner, one of the patriarchs of Forest City Ratner did indeed donate $17,000 to Mandel in 2008:
The ties to the Ratners and Mandels also run deep. The Mandels are wealthy and into the casino business. From the same document Moncrief quoted earlier:
Target Breakdown: Focus should be worked top down. $25,000-$50,000 raisers. These are the Ratners, Mal Mixon, the Mandels, and Mort Weisberg. All have good relationships with Sherrod and can and should raise $50,000 or more [emphasis mine].
And this from an email I received from Coughlin just yesterday. Coughlin apparently did do his homework. Take a look at this partial list of who the Mandel family has donated to, all Democrats:
Josh Mandel’s fundraising success is due in large part to his deep pocketed and politically active family and their vast national fundraising network. But the fact is that his family and their network have given millions of dollars to liberal Democratic candidates and organizations. Here’s just a sampling of the Mandel family money machine’s contributions. The same people who are bankrolling Josh Mandel have been giving big money to ALL these Democrats. (If this list weren’t taken off the actual fund raising reports, it would be hard to believe):
$2100 Stephanie Tubbs Jones 2006
$2300 Bill Richardson 2007
$500 Lee Fisher 2009
$250 Marcia Fudge 2009
$250 Ohio Democratic Party 2009
$500 Ted Strickland 2008
$4100 Ted Strickland 2006
$250 Tim Hagan 2002
$1000 Ohio Democratic Party State Candidate Fund 2002
$12100 Joe Lieberman 2006
$2400 Ron Klein 2010
$2400 Ben Lujan 2010
$2300 Bill Richardson 2007
$3250 Ellen Simon 2006
$2000 Allyson Schwartz 2005
$2000 Joseph Cimperman 2007
$2000 Frank Lautenberg 2007
$2000 Marcia Fudge 2010
$1500 Shelley Berkley 2010
$1250 Eleanor Holmes Norton 2007
$1000 Barbara Lee 2007
Another little tidbit on Mandel from his days as a student as OSU. He helped organize and is seen cheering and clapping his hands at a rally for none other than Albert Gore. And this man claims he is a conservative? FYI Mandel is the fellow in the gray Ohio State sweatshirt:
Also during his Ohio State days Mandel advocated domestic partnership rights for gays.
“The Undergraduate Student Government representatives have been and will continue to advocate for domestic partner benefits in public and private settings,” said USG President Josh Mandel. “Students want it, students deserve it, and the university has a responsibility to provide it.”
There is a certain standard criteria for domestic partnership, but it is not necessarily the criteria that will be used here at OSU, said Mary Daniels, assistant vice president for the Office of Student Affairs. The partnership includes same-sex [emphasis mine] and opposite-sex unmarried couples.
Yes, Sherrod Brown must go. But I don’t believe Ohio, and the nation, can afford 6 more years from a potential senator with connections and liberal tendencies as I have outlined above.
Senator Demint, I hope you are reading this..
