Salazar locks up most of Alaska NPR-A from drilling

Despite the encouraging picture at the right of Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar moving “forward” he is actually moving us “backward.” Very quickly.

Last week I reported Obama had “cherry-picked” items he included in his faux energy policy in his 2013 State of the Union address, and to add more fuel to the firestorm he and his administration have created in blocking domestic fossil fuel production, he has now banned energy production in half of our petroleum reserve in Alaska.

Of the 23 million acres in reserve on Alaska’s north slope, energy production will be allowed on an nearly 12 million acres believed to hold 549 million barrels of oil – a small percentage of what the U.S. Geological Survey estimates the entire reserve holds — nearly three billion barrels of recoverable oil.

According to the USGS there are over 2.7 billion barrels of oil and 114.36 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the NPR-A. Senior VP of Policy Dan Kish of the Institute for Energy Research speaks with Special Report about opening vast federal lands to energy development which could produce $14.4 trillion in GDP over the next 37 years:

So as you compare Obama’s statements at SOTU with his actual policies the two sure are at odds with one another.

Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA) Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee released this statement:

“As gasoline prices continue to increase for the 34th day in a row, the Obama Administration has responded by locking up a majority of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, which Congress specifically established for oil and natural gas production,” said Chairman Hastings. “Only in President Obama’s backwards worldview of anti-energy policies does it make sense to prohibit energy production in a place specifically set aside for energy production at a time when gasoline prices are skyrocketing and federal oil and natural gas production is declining.”

Congress set up this tract of land 90 years ago, which is the size of Indiana, for drilling purposes. But DOI and Obama have once again caved to the environmentalists like Sierra Club and Greenpeace.

Kennedy Curse continues: 2 arrested at Keystone protest

Image at right from AP.

Conor Kennedy has been having a really bad year.

First Taylor Swift dumps him and then yesterday he, his father Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., civil rights activist Julian Bond, Daryl Hannah, two prominent members of the Sierra Club and about 40 others were arrested in front of the White House after chaining themselves to a fence. The purpose was to protest the building of the Keystone XL pipeline.

Also arrested was former NASA climate activist James Hansen.

A couple weeks ago I reported the Sierra Club intended to go *lawless* and create “civil disobedience” on February 17 at a huge rally in D.C. billed as the “largest climate change rally in history.”

But for whatever reason a group decided to show on Valentine’s Day instead but it seems it turned out to be the “smallest climate change rally in history.”

Democracy Now has an 11 minute video interview of some of the miscreants, but I won’t subject you to it in its entirety but instead pull out a few salient remarks.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is confident Obama will kill Keystone because:

Because I think it’s the right thing to do, and I think he knows that. And I think he—you know, I think he has a strong moral core, and I think John Kerry does, too. And I think, ultimately, he would not do something that is—that is this catastrophic and irresponsible and reckless.

Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune had this to say:

And it might sound a little surprising that an organization like the Sierra Club, that’s been around for so long and has been a part of so many important fights, that it’s the first time we do civil disobedience. But we look at this project, the tar sands pipeline, and it’s a boondoggle. It’s such a—it would contribute to such a climate disaster that we realize we have to use every single tool of democracy in order to fight this thing. We’ll fight it in the courts. We’ll fight it in statehouses and here in the Beltway, in the streets. But we realize that we have to do every single thing that we can to make sure that instead of putting $7 billion into a dirty oil pipeline, that we’re investing in clean energy instead.

And not to be outdone by the others Julian Bond remarked:

This is a decision that affects all Americans, and we want to make sure he does the right thing, which is to say no to the pipeline. It’s a great deal for Canada, great deal for Mexico; doesn’t do much for the United States.

Of course no mention of all the jobs the pipeline would create or that Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman recently approved the new route of the pipeline through his state.

But not to worry: Connor and his dad escaped jail time and got off with just a $100 fine.

The Kennedy Curse may get them into troubles, but some how it always manages to get them out of troubles.

But Sierra Club vows as/of the writing of this article the “biggest climate change rally in history” will still go on February 17.

Sierra Club to go *lawless* with Keystone protests

There have been many radical environmental groups protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline.

First we had the tree sitters, who called it quits after the pipeline was erected around them:

Then we had the “Tar Sands Action” group:

Code Pink showed their “support and solidarity” for those protesters who went on hunger strikes or were arrested:

But readers, *Save the date*. February 17 in D.C. For the first-time in its illustrious history, the Sierra Club is going to break the law to try and stop the Keystone pipeline.

With Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman approving the pipeline’s route through his state Tuesday, Sierra Club President Michael Brune hopped onto Facebook to announce that the San Francisco-headquartered Club is “for the first time in our 120-year history….be engaging in peaceful civil disobedience to help stop the dirty and destructive Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. We’re all in!”

Below is their tweet announcing this:

This must be a really, really big deal because they actually went to their Board of Directors to get this approved:

“The recent decision made by the Board of Directors is not one we take lightly,” said Allison Chin, Sierra Club President. “As a nation, we are beginning to achieve significant success in the fight against climate disruption. But allowing the production, transport, export and burning of the dirtiest oil on Earth now would be a giant leap backwards in that progress. The Board is answering the urgency of this threat with our decision to engage, for one time, in civil disobedience.”

What that *civil disobedience* will actually be, well, they haven’t told us. Yet.

Back in July of 2011 NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg announced he was donating $50 million out of his own pocket to help the Sierra Club *dump coal.* But this writer doubts Sierra Club separates their donations and Bloomie’s money will be helping to aid and abet this *civil disobedience.*

February 17 is a Sunday folks, so maybe some of us off work can catch the show and start a bet pool on how many will be arrested.

Radical environmental groups file suit against Dept of Interior to stop Shell’s Alaska drilling

Image at the right is from Greenpeace’s website.

Last week I reported the radical environmental group Greenpeace was on their way to Shell’s drilling area in northern Alaska with submersibles and an ice ship to protest the beginning of their drilling.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R) and Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA) sent letters to NOAA and BSEE requesting assurances from these federal agencies Shell’s interests, and the interests of any group, person or entity involved in the drilling operation be protected.

Also of interest is that Greenpeace’s Netherlands “chief” Sylvia Borren staged a hoax in which she “claimed” she was Shell’s new CEO and had immediately banned Shell’s drilling in Alaska.

Last May Shell was issued a restraining order effective until the end of October against Greenpeace. Greenpeace’s ice-class ship the Esperanza, interestingly enough with a Netherlands flag, arrived in Seattle as Shell was preparing for its trip to the drilling site. Greenpeace had boarded one of Shell’s rigs back in February as it was leaving New Zealand and  according to the order Greenpeace must stay 200 miles from shore.

But Greenpeace is determined. On July 10 of this year they along with other radical environmental groups Alaska Wilderness League, Center for Biological Diversity, National Audubon Society, Natural Resources Defense Council, Ocean Conservancy, Oceana, Pacific Environment, and the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit in U.S. Federal District Court in Anchorage to stop the drilling.

But what is interesting and outrageous is that Shell is not named a party to the lawsuit. Instead the suit is against the U.S. Dept. of Interior and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.

You see, our illustrious former president Jimmy Carter in 1980 signed a little-known law by the name of “Equal Access of Justice Act” which allows groups such as these to game the system and create revenue paid for by the taxpayers. When these groups sue the federal government, not only must the taxpayers foot the bill for the defense but they must also pay the plaintiff’s costs as well. Nice, isn’t it?

Even though the AP is saying the suit doesn’t seek to stop Shell’s intended drilling this year but in years to come, I skimmed the pleadings and couldn’t find that tidbit under their requested “reliefs” but then I am not an attorney.

Kind of ironic, the Obama administration and the Dept. of the Interior have had it out for the fossil fuel industry in this country and have tried to stall or stop coal, natural gas, oil and uranium mining. And now they are being sued for not destroying enough.

Obama neglects crucial issues on his Bus Tour, Maumee Ohio edition

It just happens that Obama made a campaign stop about 3 miles from my house today. Unfortunately I am having new linoleum put down and I missed it by THAT MUCH. Darn. But what is more important than what he said, is what he didn’t say. He didn’t say anything about energy and he didn’t say anything about how Ohio has turned her economy around under the leadership of Gov. John Kasich. He also didn’t say anything about our problems with China.

Remember this vid from EPA administrator Al “crucify ‘em” Almendariz comparing its tactics to Roman crucifixions?:

Bet you guys thought since he resigned we had seen the last of him, right? But as with all the Obama cockroaches they scurry away in the light but come back to haunt us in another way. From the ultra-radical environmental group Sierra Club comes this presser that “Crucify ‘em Al” will be  joining the staff of the Sierra Club effective in mid-July as Senior Campaign Representative for the organization’s Beyond Coal campaign.

New York Mayor Bloomberg donated $50M of his own money a year ago to this” Beyond Coal” campaign and in the words of our “Occupier of the Oval Office” let me be perfectly clear: this campaign’s goal is with the assistance of the job-killing EPA and all their new regs, to eradicate coal in toto: to put out of business all existing coal plants, and to prevent future coal plants from being built.

And in case you think I am exaggerating, for those of you who missed it, below is a video from Sen. James Inhofe of EPA Administrator Carl Spalding admitting on camera Obama-EPA regs will be “painful”:

Yes, he said:

“if you want to build a coal plant, you’ve got a big problem.”

As a resident of Ohio this state receives about 80% of her electricity from coal. From America’s Power comes this chart which shows that in Ohio, those making less than $10,000 a year after taxes spend a whopping 82% of their income on energy:

Pretty stunning. But did Obama address this issue during his rally when thousands are out of work in this major coal-producing state? No. Instead he and his EPA officials seem to take sadistic pleasure by creating more onerous and expensive regulations.

Obama complained a lot about his opponent’s “negative campaign ads” and how expensive they were. But he never mentioned how now Governor John Kasich and his common sense policies have grown this state’s $.89 (yes, you read that right) slush fund into a whopping $482 million slush fund and balanced Ohio’s budget. Below is a short vid on how it was done:

Obama also resurrected his talk about getting tough on China from the last campaign. More election year rhetoric. In 2007, Obama made the same promise but four years in office tells a different story. You know when Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown says Obama has failed to confront China, you have a problem. From the RNC a short vid on Obama’s failed  policies with China:

This was clearly a campaign stump which again contained nothing new about fixing our economy, getting people back to work and using the energy resources we have within Ohio, and the rest of this country, to make us energy independent.
